Letting Go

Their shadows lengthen day by day
as they walk from childhood.
Picking tricky paths
through hormones
they escape for good,
beyond our grasping hands.

They go
laden
with parents’ idiosyncracies,
stepping out
heavy with baggage
to find their own identities.

And stressed
and taut
are strings that tie us yet,
and as they pull
we dance
like marionettes.
