Uneasy Dreams

Fear taints dreams of beautiful things
love, passion and desire
burdening our happy state, as if to taunt us:
"you cherish these things, don't you boy?
you can lose them in the blink of an eye"

It would seem that this cruelty,
an assault upon our most peaceful of places
is not merely an imp on our shoulders in the night
the mischief caused, carries lessons, wisdom
enlightens us to that which we deny, in our waking minds

Uneasy dreams, restless as they are
primeval howls in the night
remind us of our humanity; we once feared the tooth and claw
serve as checks and balances in our hearts
disrobe us, with those we hold dear
even though our conscious states, disagree
