A childhood warning from my mother

River Devil

The warm monsoon rain
Sets a tale from an African scene
A child playing by the river bank
Unaware of the swelling stream.

The mother's voice calls out sharply
A warning laced with fear.
Do not go near the river my child
For the devil will know you're here.

She will rise from the waters
And take your soul my child
Along with the other little boys and girls
Who's spirits are too wild.

She likes to bathe in the moonlight
But you mustn't play in the day
For she'll wait behind the river rocks
To take you far away.

Way down the river
Never to be found
Do not go near the river my child
For to the devil you'll be bound.
