Read introduction

This poem was written for a competition on RTE Radio 1's "Poetry Programme", February 2007. It was read on the programme by Catherine Brennan. The brief was to write a 10-line poem for Valentine's Day. I wrote this about yet another straight woman for whom I had fallen! Plus ce change etc.

I can't send you a card.

What on earth would it say?
"Sometimes women do like women",
But sometimes it doesn't stop there.

I won't give up my spinsterhood.
Though we could knit two together,
Share one fire on long silent evenings.

I can't send you a card
And you won't even hear this.
