Winter Song

In the North woods long ago
one day it was too cold to snow,
a wolf pack hunted hungry, raging,
and came upon a cabin, aging.
In the North Woods long ago,
one day it was too cold to snow.

The old man living there had fire,
And solitude his one desire,
he heard them come from far away,
and knew them near at close of day.
The old man living there had fire,
and solitude his one desire.

They circled long outside the light,
and howled against his door that night,
the old man waited, silent, still,
for cold and night to do their will.
They circled long outside the light,
and howled against his door that night.

When Springtime came, after the thaw,
a hunting party came and saw,
a cabin torn by tooth and claw,
and what was left was only bone
in the forest, all alone.
When Springtime came, after the thaw
a hunting party came and saw.
