Chess Pieces

The chess we played upon pieces of skin
Touches the mind in spots of past presence
In ceilings trapped where reflections of attics
Cast shadows, we stepped into the pawns
The masks of black and white
Failing to fall, capturing souls and dependent
Dreams, we broke the pieces as the game
Split into fractions, stretching hours to days,
Our sweat drew new lines as defence was rebuilt
We had learned our bodies as chess pieces
And checkmate sounded hollow.
