This is originally about the loss of a child and the love/pain always being a constant. It can be interpreted in many ways.

I woke yesterday,
And I loved you,
I woke today,
I still loved you.

On my eightieth birthday,
I'll wake if I can,
When I'm old and grey,
And remember your scan.

I'll crawl out of bed,
To remind you it's true,
I meant it when I said,
I will always love you.
