Oktoberfest Parade

Teams of horses tinkle
With burnished harness
Pulling drays of stacked barrels

And women in dirndl waving,
No longer at me,
But at younger men.

A woman's empty balcony
Commands a view she shuns,
Listening only to the bands

And the cheers through
half-open windows,
She smokes herself

Slowly to death,
Trapped in her room
By her childhood.

Children in carousels
Spin in delighted circles
Too small for me,

Loosening my desperate grip
On the corpse
Of what once was.
