Read introduction

Federico Garcia Lorca was considered the finest Spanish poet of his generation, and was murdered - almost certainly by Fascists - at the start of the Civil War in 1936. His body as never been found.

I first came to know his works from the inclusion of two of them in Shostakovich's 14th Symphony.

His statue is in Plaza de Santa Ana in central Madrid.

I look at him
Trying to remember.

He holds a bird
In his hands

And children pause
Play to embrace him.

The defiant November
Sun shines warm

As a woman
Thrusts a red carnation

Under my nose
And harangues me

In a language
I don't understand.
