Fishing Like Ted Hughes

I feel the attraction
of immersion
in a landscape,

a sinking release
into a wild valley
of seductive beauty,

the thrill of the chase
beneath a dream of eyes,
the gasping writhing

wet landed prey,
deep dilating pupils
of sweet near death.

But the deceit
of the lure,
pretence of fly

or dangled worm,
a pale maggot impaled
on a pitiless hook,

dishonest animal screaming
shorn of nature's excuses,
and a vain hope

cruel conceit can fill
a soul's empty quarter;
there are only victims.
