Read introduction

Reculver is a lovely spot on the Kent coast, where a medieval church once stood next to the remains of a Roman fort. Now half the fort has fallen into the sea, and only the towers of the church remain - preserved, for now.

A skylark soars
above downs
that end abruptly
in a tumble of clay.

The sea shimmers
grey-lilac silver,
and foams onto
shingle beaches.

The church towers
stand still alone,
heritage shorn of
doctrine, abandoned

To the crumbling cliffs,
complacent England
astride yet older ruins
surrendered to the tide.
