Read introduction

Birka is an island in Central Sweden, the site of an ancient Viking settlement. We use Viking as a noun, but it was originally a verb - meaning to go off on a voyage in search of plunder.

Every shade of blue
White glare smashing
Sea-sky-mirror
With dazzle.

Grass mounds left
By men departed,
Gone a-viking,
Bear witness

Beneath standing
Stones and two trees
Seemingly growing
From one root.

Looking closer, now,
From a distance,
I see they always
Grew apart.
