In my sensitive youth
I felt the stirring,
In the air
And beneath my feet,
Of the unquiet dead.

Slowly the survivors
Sank beneath the weight
Of the years,
Bleeding into a common
Stain, faded yet indelible:

Earth and sky brokered
Peace in these woods and fields.
Only the stones,
The very stones themselves
Still speak.
