Being Driven to Austria

Lakes of mist collect
in bowls as offerings
to implacable gods

attended by the birches
blast-coated with ice,
and meringue-layered pines;

a shower of silver
draws a crushed-diamond
veil across the forest

just where the road
weaves between draped
frozen waterfalls.

Twist by twist
the turning road snags
the tattered remnants

of my englishness,
and the other small
things dragging behind.
