Read introduction

Dinkley is a point on the River Ribble in Lancashire, not far from my boyhood home.

It was an adventure
To trek through
Plumped green fields
Down to a river

Running shallow over stones
To collect cold
In deep still pools
Fit, we thought, for bears.

Now I know just how tame
These wilds are
And how close to
The town I escaped,

The small, resentful town
That blithely
Denies its rivers
Flow into a sea.
