Missing Her Birthday

Our layered arms
Form the tricolour
Of our independence

In the cuddle after
The little girl’s bleary
Stumble to our bed.

I’m dragged away
Through August
Drizzle to a train

While they play
In sunshine
Intense as imagination,

Through sea and sandy
Laughter distant
As the cries of the gulls.
