Beeches

I would lie
Beneath the hedge
That surrounded

My childhood
For long summers
Without school,

Learning how brown
Leaves enrich
A fruitcake soil

Layered with
The bones
Of my ancestors.

Now green leaves
Flinch as rain falls
To earth a continent deep.
