Read introduction

This is another scene witnessed in a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery near Ypres. I was there covering the 80th anniversary of the end of WW1 for the BBC.

The mist blanket
Tucked round the graves
Relents only slowly
To the wan autumn sun.

The rows of
Disciplined stones await
The parade regimentally,
Perfect in eternal ranks.

Two new corpses,
Blind eyes forever closed,
Lie freshly on
The Portland slab.

Pristine in black velvet,
Large hands spread
In futile supplication,
Noses pointing to heaven.
