I didn't really like Vienna.

Sigmund Freud's Vienna Home

Thirty years after Freud
Was forced to flee for his life
An Austrian Chancellor

Was pointedly asked
(In the United States)
Why Vienna had forgotten him.

Like his patients perhaps,
This museum was conceived
In acute embarrassment.

Only echoes of his presence are present
In his photographs and books,
And in some of his possessions

That were allowed to come back,
Even though he never could.
And up the hill from the Freudhaus

A one-way street is marked
With the usual no-entry sign;
There, too, posts are painted

With two red stripes
Separated by white.
I mistake them for the Austrian flag.
