Evening mountains quietly
Encircle the valley,
Hiding in snow.

Pure melt water
Tumbles with stone
Through monumental pines,

An untrammelled blue
Unchanged since the
Last Ice Age,

Yesterday lying white
On Alpine slopes,
Wrapping the winter.

Brilliant morning sun
Sears thin air
And uncooked meringue

Drips from adamant,
Every colour glistening
In prismatic light.

Sudden choughs appear,
Startling, like happiness,
Hovering on sunbeams

While far below
Blackbird song
Weaves the spring
