I. Rue de la Folie-Mericourt

Sunlight warms wrought iron balconies
And an elegant stone facade;

Through a narrow gap
Between decaying curtains
A fleeting reflection of swifts
Proclaims spring in a splash of sky.

II. Inge in the Bathroom

Almost touchable, she stands naked
With swollen breasts and proud pregnancy;

The cheap hotel light
Etches new blue veins,
Radiating elemental beauty
Beneath thin translucent skin.

III. Metro to the Gare du Nord

An ugly old woman squeezes
‘La Vie en Rose’ from an accordion;

Braced against the jarring train
Her gorgeous smile recognises
My acknowledgement
That every parting is a little death.
