Read introduction

Broadstairs is a very nice seaside town in Kent, on the south eastern tip of England.

Charles Dickens lived there, in a house that he used as Betsy Trotwood's home in David Copperfield.

I visited with my small daughter and partner in September 2014.

Dickens lived at the top
of chalk cliffs
dominating the beach.

Lumps of pitted white stone
wash ashore and crumble
with the pressure

that can be applied just
with thumb and forefinger.
On the sand

big feet aid small hands
building castles to chase
the ebbing tide.
