Read introduction

Inspired by a visit to the Cathedrale des Sts-Michel et Gudule in Brussels. The stained glass windows are a horrendous catalogue of murder and brutality.

It was written in the week ISIS burned a captive Jordanian pilot to death.

Walls of brilliance
Cast eloquent light
Through the swords

Of knights hacking infidels;
A saint is cradled,
As if to comfort,

While axes and clubs
Steady in tight fists,
And a man in vivid blue

Slumps to the ground
Stricken, not by the dagger
In the closed hand

Of a bearded grim-faced
Murderer, but by the long blade
Of a thug in medieval green.

In such mysterious ways
The faithful conclude
God is love.
