ROTHKO

ROTHKO

the deep red of
this painting satisfies the eye

crowds murmur about the
chamber, revolving around
the eye of the storm
where you stand
gazing

colours spread on the canvas
but are still
a single
pool of white, a line of
yellow
a neon haze
stretched across an expanse
of crimson
and nothing
more

yet you are there
with the painter
drifting in the ether
as the crowd
moves on
a base note drone
hanging in the air

in the photo
the painter sits before
the painting
old head rising
above the seat

silence

does he watch
or is he also somewhere else
shades reminding him
of things unseen?

in the next room
reds give way to greys
and black
journey’s descent into
gloom

then reds again
defiant chamber
day bursts as roses
heartbeat's
scarlet
bloom
