GREAT GRANDMOTHER

GREAT GRANDMOTHER

when I was a child
the lines of you face scared
me; even when you smiled
your old-woman skin
seemed alien to me,
a travesty of a face,
gnarled and bent
like a goblin, fearful,
strange.

now I see
when you smiled, it was
only your face that
was old; your spirit was
alive as it had always
been, your smile as young
as you had always been;
inside, your heart was
eternal;
the mask
of youth
and age.
