Read introduction

Another one from the darkest time in Northern Irelands recent history. In the 1980s there were sectarian murders and atrocities almost daily.
As a young man at the time I could not get my head around the madness. I still cannot.
When I think of how life was cheap and blood spilled for the sake of tribal testosterone, and felt it everyday. It still makes me sick.
I'll never get over it and nor will many of my generation.

Diminished Responsibility

Can we have come so far,
To only fall away again?
Humanity decrepit,
Contorted and insane.
Are we all so stupid
To let the fires burn
Away our souls forever,
With no return?
What value are our children?
Its as if we just don't care,
We make them play with dynamite,
A poisoned Chalice share.
What price for life?
It doesn't matter anymore.
Its just a game of football,
Counting up the blood-let score.
Why has our father left us,
As lunatics alone?
We're sad, mad headless chickens
No-one hears above the drone.
Where is the hero,
with vision, guts and power,
To stand against the demons,
To end the endless war?
This is a leaderless society
All we like sheep have gone astray,
Death will eat our hearts out,
When life gets turned away.
