This poem was inspired by the return of Oswald Laurence’s voice to a station on the London Underground.

Mind The Gap

Profilepicby Paul Welbourn20 Jul 2013

Sitting alone watching the tube trains roll
Up to the bustling platform, It arrives.
Lights from deep within the black hole
Excite her; They keep his memory alive.

“Mind the gap” echoes deep in London’s veins
But thousands have heard it hundreds of times,
And thought his three word warning was mundane,
Eventually removed him from every line.

The rekindled voice of her departed
In memoriam at Embankment station.
He is aurally risen from the dead,
Eyes closed awaiting his visitation .

And now once again she sits in the tube,
The three word phrase she hears is “I love you”.
