Meditation on pickled fish - a traditional South African Cape delicacy

Pickled yellowtail

A gift from Uncle Joey,
you came wrapped, traditionally,
in the classified pages.

You were a good-sized fish.
Big bones,
scimitar-curved and tempered
over ponderous years
the kelp meadows.

A good end: of course,
the victors write history.

But, sliced
in dignified wedges,

embalmed in tumeric-yellow,
robed in curry leaves,
adorned in peppercorns,
wreathed in pale onion,
you seem at peace.

I chew gravely.
There is substance to your flesh,
strata of muscular memories,
I can't fathom,
only digest.
