Lightning Struck Maple

That tree took one in the heart
a bolt that lit the kitchen
leaving ozone smell
splashing a circle of thunder
blowing sapwood through
bark like matching ellipses
on a green page

that tree fought death
gnawing off limbs
like a trapped animal
the east side healed
the west wound
opened to wood wasps

that tree tapped the sewer line
drinking the debris of decades
forging growth rings from our past
sending up roots like humpbacks
trolling for lawnmower blades.
