The Cardinal in Winter

watches
from a bare
crepe myrtle
branch

as a squirrel
gorges on seed
from a wooden
bird feeder

suspended
from a backyard
shepherd’s
crook.

The squirrel drapes
down the feeder’s
roof like a slung
brown scarf

dips its head
through the door
grips the seed
in forepaws

defies gravity
again
by swallowing up
while looking down.

Sated
he descends
the black iron
pole

as the cardinal
looks around
the yard
then flies

to the porch
still strewn with
tempting
seeds.
